Collins: Time for the Government to do the right thing and scrap the means test for Carer’s Allowance once and for all

Independent Ireland leader Michael Collins TD has called on the Government to use the upcoming Budget to finally abolish the means test for Carer’s Allowance, saying it is long past time carers were given the recognition and respect they deserve.

“Carers save the State hundreds of millions of euro every year,” Deputy Collins said. “They commit their lives to looking after loved ones in the home, often under enormous strain, and yet the Government continues to penalise them with a means test that is cruel, unfair and outdated.”

The Cork South-West TD said that families providing care are already under enough pressure without having to navigate red tape and financial assessments that often exclude those who need support the most.

“It is not just about money — it is about recognition. Carers provide a service that the State could never afford to fully replace. They keep families together, they care with love and dignity, and they deserve to be supported without conditions,” he said.

Deputy Collins urged the Government to make the change in this Budget. “If we are serious about valuing carers, then let’s do the right thing. Scrap the means test, lift this burden once and for all, and give carers the support they should have had years ago. I have been calling for this change since I was first elected to Dail Eireann and now is the time for the Government to do what is right”

He concluded: “Carers are not looking for special treatment — they are looking for fairness. The time for half-measures is over. In this Budget, the Government must finally do right by the people who give so much of themselves to care for others.”
