"Families being squeezed while the Government turns its back" – Michael Collins TD slams inaction as cost of groceries soars

Michael Collins TD, Leader of Independent Ireland, has today condemned the Government’s failure to support struggling families as new figures reveal households are now paying over €3,000 more annually for groceries—a warning sign that the cost-of-living crisis is far from over.

“Prices are spiralling, families are under pressure, and the Government’s message is: the election is over - and we won't be offering further cost of living supports,” said Collins, referring to reports that the Coalition is not planning meaningful relief in the upcoming Budget, and is instead increasing costs in key areas.

According to the Irish Independent, grocery bills have surged by more than €3,000 per year, with industry experts warning that the "days of cheap food are over". The article also notes that price increases on everyday items like dairy, bread, and household staples are now being baked into permanent costs.

“For an average family, €3,000 is the difference between getting by and falling behind. Coupled with that, we have families now having to decide whether they can afford to send their children to college following the minister's announcement that student fees will be increasing by €1000,” Collins said.

He also hit out at the Government’s apparent refusal to extend energy credits or consider tax relief for working families in Budget 2026. “Instead of easing the pressure, they’re actively making things worse. We’ve seen new levies proposed, hikes in transport and childcare fees, and no sign of urgency from the Taoiseach or Minister for Finance.”

“This Government has completely lost touch with ordinary people. We’re hearing from families—many of them working full time—who now have to choose between groceries and electricity, between summer camps and filling the car.”

Collins said Independent Ireland will use every available platform to push for urgent relief measures and force a rethink of the “punitive and out-of-touch” budget plans currently under way.

“Government spin can’t cover this up. If they move ahead with price hikes and ignore the crisis in food and energy costs, then they are choosing to make life harder for Irish families. And we won’t let them off the hook.”
