Ciaran Mullooly MEP: “This is a wake-up call for Ursula von der Leyen - it cannot be business as usual.”
Commenting on this weeks censure motions in the European Parliament against Ursula von der Leyen, Midlands-North-West MEP Ciaran Mullooly reiterated his strong opposition to her leadership of the European Commission.
“I have made my views on this matter crystal clear from the beginning,” Mr Mullooly said. “I voted against Ursula von der Leyen when she was elected President of the Commission, and I supported the previous censure motion because of her deeply problematic stance on the genocide in Gaza, her push to conclude the unfair Mercosur trade deal, and her attempts to centralise power in Brussels and in national capitals, at the expense of regions and local communities.” The MEP stressed that had he been present in Strasbourg today, his vote would have been exactly the same: to hold the Commission President to account.
"Some might say that voting on censure motions plays into the hands of extremes. I reject that assertion. My stance is not about left or right , it is about right and wrong. If the Commission President continues to pursue policies that damage communities and erode trust in Europe, then standing against them is not just legitimate, it is necessary."
“This is her second and third wake-up call, it cannot be business as usual. The European Commission must change course and start listening to the people it is supposed to serve. I will continue to oppose her Presidency, as long as the policies that undermine or local communities continue to be proposed,” Mr Mullooly concluded.
